GIS LINKS

The purpose of this site is to acquaint utility companies with organizations that maintain, share, and distribute Kentucky GIS data; local examples of multi-agency GIS that include utilities; and professional organizations that focus on GIS and utilities.

DATA

Kentucky Geography Network: This serves as the Commonwealth's Geospatial Data Clearinghouse. It is a "one-stop-shop" for geographic data resources related to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A variety of datasets can be located and accessed, static map products can be downloaded, and several Internet Mapping solutions are accessible via the site.

Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA): GIS data includes not only water utilities, but also counties, incorporated city boundaries, incorporated city points, road centerlines, topographic maps (DRGs or digital raster graphics), digital elevation models, and ortho quarter quadrangle images, and geologic quadrangles. Included with the topographic maps (DRGs) are an Image Extension for AutoCAD and a document, "Guidance for CAD Users".

Kentucky Office of Geographic Information (OGI) : The office resides under the Governor’s Office for Technology to provide a single point for coordination of GIS resources, facilitate a statewide geospatial clearinghouse, provide technical assistance and support initiatives of the Geographic Information Advisory Council. The twenty-five member Council is the state's policy planning group for geographic information and geographic information systems. OGI web page highlights include: data to order or download; training class schedule; information on the annual Kentucky GIS Conference; and a contact list for state and local agencies.

Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet: The Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet, which has been collecting GIS data since the 1970s, has an extensive amount of data that is available over the web.

Kentucky Geological Survey: The map site at the Kentucky Geological Survey lists maps for sale as paper prints, maps in digital form, and GIS data. This site should be of particular interest to those utilities directly utilizing Kentucky's natural resources: particularly coal, natural gas, and water.

Kentucky Geodetic Advisor: Any utility that conducts surveying, will find the information on this site useful for obtaining National Geodetic Survey information and data sheets for Kentucky. Learn about improvements to the Kentucky geodetic control network and the Kentucky One Zone State Plane Coordinate System.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: The Transportation Cabinet's Division of Planning has maps available to download of the coal haul highway system, the Kentucky Official Highway Map, and county highway maps. There is also a link to GIS information. Extracts from the Highway Information System are available for download as shape files.

MULTI-AGENCY GIS ORGANIZATIONS with Utilities

Louisville/Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC): LOJIC represents a multi-agency effort to build and maintain a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) to serve all of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky. Present LOJIC participants include the City of Louisville, Jefferson County, Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), the Property Valuation Administrator (PVA) and the Louisville Water Company. All participants are sharing the cost and effort involved in the full development and successful implementation of LOJIC.

Barren Information Technology Systems (BITS): BITS is a consortium, formed in 1992, is made up of the following partners: the City of Glasgow, Kentucky - (City Government), the Barren County Fiscal Court - (County Government), the Glasgow Electric Plant Board, the Glasgow Water Company, Farmer's Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation and the Barren County School Board. Clark County GIS Consortium: The Clark County Geographic Information System (CCGIS) Consortium, formed in 1997, was organized to provide the Winchester and Clark County community with a computer-based tool for mapping, organizing information, and analyzing places and events. CCGIS was formed by three local governmental agencies: the City of Winchester, Clark County Property Administration Office, and Winchester Municipal Utilities.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Geographic Information Technology Association: The mission of the Geospatial Information Technology Association (GITA) is to provide excellence in education and information exchange on the use and benefits of geospatial information and technology in telecommunications, infrastructure and utility applications worldwide. The GITA web page contains a discussion of the distinction and similarities among AM/FM, CADD, SCADA, and GIS. This international professional organization hosts an annual conference, seminars and workshops.
